A fight in a busy Kmart carpark allegedly sparked Wodonga’s second shooting within weeks.

Police allege about 50 people were in Mann Central Plaza when the drama unfolded around 7pm on Wednesday night.

Two men, who police say were known to each other, got into an verbal fight.

Wodonga Local Area Command Inspector Paul Hargreaves said it’s alleged a 27-year-old Wagga Wagga man returned to the scene and fired a shot.

The Wagga Wagga man then fled and was arrested on High St shortly after, along with a 23-year-old Albury woman.

Inspector Hargreaves said it was not a random attack.

“It is very concerning but we have responded very quickly and locked down the scene,” he said.

“There was an early arrest which should give a lot of peace to the community.”

Just weeks ago on September 19, four driveby shootings occurred at Wodonga homes.

While Inspector Hargreaves said he believed the incidents were unrelated, he was concerned about the rate of gun violence in the community.

“What it says to us is there are firearms in our community, we know that,” he said.

“We’ve had reports of firearms being stolen over many years, and sometimes they get into the hands of the wrong people.

“If you are a legal firearm holder, its really important you secure firearms and keep them out of harms way.

“With two incidents in a month, we don’t link those together, but unfortunately they have occurred.

“But we have acted very quickly and all those people are in custody.”

Inspector Hargreaves said police have been executing a number of warrants in search of illegal firearms.

“If you know someone who has a firearm, you need to get in contact with us and report that information so we can act swiftly,” he said.

“We have executed a number of warrants and retrieved firearms, and that’s usually as a result of people coming forward who are concerned about that behaviour.”

The Wagga Wagga man and Albury woman remain in custody awaiting interviews into the matter.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
