Wodonga Gold Cup: Uncertainty over city’s biggest racing event

The Wodonga Gold Cup is just five weeks away, and organisers are still waiting to find out what kind of crowds will be able to attend the event.
The Wodonga Gold Cup is the city’s biggest social event of the year with a record crowd of 9500 people attending in 2019.
But Racing Wodonga general manager Steve Wright said the event would look a lot different this year.
“At this stage we’re still waiting and following the advice of the State Government and Racing Victoria,” Mr Wright said.
“We don’t really know but we have a few different plans for once we get the go ahead and know how many people we can have.
“We’re just playing a bit of a waiting game at the moment.
“We’ve got our fingers crossed that we can have a decent sized crowd here on the day.”
The fourth step in Victoria’s road map to reopening is due to take place on November 23, and Mr Wright said he was hoping for some good news.
Despite the uncertainty, he said they were glad the event was going ahead, one way or another.
“It’s definitely going to be different,” he said.
“Last year was a massive day and a record crowd, and it won’t be anything like that.
“We’re just looking forward to the day, regardless of how many people are here.
“We’re going to put on a great day and hope for the best between now and then.”
The Wodonga Gold Cup is due to be held on November 27 at the Wodonga Racecourse.
