A man has been rushed to hospital after a violent stabbing attack outside a tobacconist on Chapel St this morning.
The victim was knifed in broad daylight outside Prahran’s In & Out Tobacconist, next to Taco Bell, near the intersection of Chapel St and Malvern Rd just before 8am on Wednesday.
Police are searching the South Yarra and Prahran areas to locate the “unknown offender”.
The victim, a man in his 30s, has been taken to The Alfred hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his lower body.
He remains in a serious condition.
Detectives from the Stonnington CIU believe the two men may be known to each other.
“Police are currently making inquiries into the whereabouts of the offender and an investigation is under way,” police said in a statement.
Witness Debbie said there was “blood everywhere” outside the smoke and vape shop.
“Well there’s about 12 police there, there’s no person, so I’d imagine they’ve been taken to hospital but there’s blood everywhere,” she told 3AW.
Chapel St in Prahran and South Yarra has seen several other violent incidents in recent months.
A man was filmed torching a cafe nearby before he too was engulfed in flames.
That blaze, which is still under investigation, damaged several nearby stores, including another tobacconist, closing the area for a number of days.
The firebombing of the Lux nightclub also shut part of the Chapel St precinct for weeks in November.
That blaze was believed to have been the result of friction surrounding the illicit tobacco sector.
Police last month arrested a man accused of dealing drugs outside a number of pubs and clubs along the busy shopping strip.
He was accused of dealing the goods in broad daylight for some time before his apartment was raided by detectives.
A man was also stabbed inside popular Chapel St nightclub Revolver in September last year.
Anyone who witnessed Wednesday’s incident, has CCTV/dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
