A man is fighting for life after he was stabbed inside a popular Prahran nightclub overnight.
The 31-year-old man was on the dance floor at Revolver Upstairs on Chapel St when he was set upon by two offenders in the early hours of Sunday.
It is believed a machete was used during the attack.
The venue has closed and DJs sets planned for tonight have been rescheduled in the wake of the violence.
Witnesses said staff used tea towels and tissues to try and stop the man bleeding before an ambulance arrived.
A bartender, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Herald Sun there were screams, then “everything went silent” inside the usually bustling club.
Frantic staff and patrons called for help, as offenders fled the scene.
They were last seen running along Macquarie St.
People living near the venue described a frantic scene about 4.30am as people tried to help the victim before he was whisked away in an ambulance.
The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries to his upper body.
Police are currently canvassing CCTV footage from inside and around the venue as part of their investigations.
A sign was plastered on the door of the nightclub just after noon on Sunday, informing patrons of the venue’s closure.
“We are heartbroken by the violent incident that took place at Revolver Upstairs this morning,” the sign read.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible event.
“Our highest priority has always been the safety of our patrons, artists and staff.
“Revolver has always been committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all.”
It is believed DJ sets planned for tonight, headlined by popular electronic duo Bag Raiders, have been rescheduled as a result of the incident.
A substance which appeared to be blood could be seen on the pavement near the back entrance of the venue.
Remnants of police tape were also stuck to bins in the back area, which looked as though it had recently been washed down.
One man who had been inside the club at the time said people had been left distraught after the attack.
He said police and nightclub staff scanned everyone’s ID as they left just after 4am.
“All of a sudden there was just a huge line of people on the steps trying to leave,” he said
“It took me like an hour to get out, it would have taken others about an hour and a half.
“There were people sitting in the gutter in tears, crying and everything.”
Another patron, who didn’t want to be named, said the stabbing had “polluted” the club scene.
“Revs is an institution, it’s a community, it’s a place where can come together,” she said.
“But this has changed Revolver forever. Until the new generation comes in, this will stick with the history of our community.
“(The club scene has) become so polluted and violent, it’s not what Melbourne’s nightlife is about.”
Patron, Josh, said he had been enjoying his night when he heard reports of a man being stabbed.
“We were just having a good time and then next minute five police rocked up,” he said.
What appeared to be a bloodied leather jacket was left near the scene.
The item was tucked under fencing at the back of the property, just a metre away from where blood was left splattered on the pavement.
Detectives came to retrieve the jacket just after 9.30am, placing it an evidence bag and taking photos of the scene.
