Railway Estate car fire

Residents in South Townsville woke up to the smell of fire after car thieves torched a stolen Toyota Corolla on their street.

Police are investigating a vehicle fire at Brooks Street, Railway Estate on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 1.40am, where a Toyota Corolla was found ablaze.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The vehicle involved had been reported stolen just two days prior, taken from a Clayton Street address in Hermit Park last Thursday night.

Anyone with information on the stolen vehicle or the fire is urged to contact the police as investigations continue.

It comes after a busy few days of stolen car antics in Townsville, including an incident where thieves crashed a stolen Holden Colorado dual cab ute into the traffic lights at the intersection of Palmerston and Hugh St in Currajong on Friday.
