The world’s biggest hotel chain will launch its first South Australian offering on Thursday, promising to provide a further boost to the city’s booming accommodation sector.

The $200m Adelaide Marriott is officially opening its doors for guests, showcasing 285 luxurious guest rooms and suites in the historic GPO building on the corner of Franklin and King William Streets.

Adelaide Marriott general manager Paul Gallop said the hotel would become an “iconic” addition to the city and draw more visitors to SA, thanks to Marriott International’s 200 million loyalty members worldwide.

“We will bring and attract people to the state. People that may not have looked at the state before will have a reason to come now,” he said.

Paying homage to the building’s 150-plus year history, the 14-story hotel combines the old with the new but maintains a “modern contemporary” look, Mr Gallop said.

“In the past, they’ve been more traditional hotels, but this is like a large residential home in its feel,” he said.

Rooms start at about $329 a night, depending on the season, up to $4000 a night for their 145 sqm Post Master General suite, or presidential suite.

“It’s worth every penny. It just feels like a luxury apartment,” Mr Gallop said.

The Adelaide Marriott features two dining venues, restaurant Penny Blue and cafe/bar Exchange Lane, a fitness studio and 18-metre indoor swimming pool, and a 24-hour executive lounge.

There’s also more than 762sq m of meeting and event space – including a large ballroom.

The Marriott’s opening comes as the Adelaide accommodation sector records its strongest ever first-half of the year.

Five of the six months reached new highs for the number of rooms occupied across metro Adelaide, and March was the strongest on record with an average of 8687 rooms occupied each night.

Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison said the government’s focus on major events were helping to drive the city’s “record-breaking results”.

“The new Adelaide Marriott Hotel will be yet another reason for those considering a visit to South Australia to commit to a trip and discover why our state is a must-visit destination all year round,” she said.
