A 31-year-old meth trafficker who accrued a “staggering” $158k profit over an eight-month period – despite requiring a “myriad” of medication – will spend close to five years in prison after pleading guilty.

After suffering a stroke in 2021 at the age of just 28, Jake Raphael Remment was told by doctors he was in need of a pacemaker – leaving Judge Paul Muscat in disbelief he continued to take and deal illicit drugs.

“Why you would even consider using illicit drugs such as methylamphetamine and GHB (fantasy), given the perilous state of your health, is incredible,” Judge Muscat said.

In the District Court last Thursday, Judge Muscat said tens of thousands of dollars had been transferred into Remment’s account in 2021 – $34,000 in September, $42,000 in October and $25,000 in November.

A few weeks before his arrest in late November, police pulled his vehicle over and allegedly found nearly $18,000 in cash.

Over 74g of meth was seized from Remment’s car in 2021.

“It is obvious from the evidence that you were in the business of selling methylamphetamine and what you were selling was very profitable, as the moneys deposited into your bank account between March 2021 and November 2021 reveal,” Judge Muscat said.

“A review of your bank account over that period reveals deposits into your account transferred from various other accounts totalling a staggering $158,426.68.”

On November 19, 2021, police pulled over Remment’s vehicle and searched his car, resulting in the seizure of 74.34g of meth and $1370 in cash.

A passenger in the vehicle allegedly had close to $1000 cash used to purchase drugs from Remment, the court heard.

Remment had been profiting “substantially” from his drug trafficking, of which he was part of wider enterprise in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, the judge said.

“In my view, the evidence reveals that you were operating somewhere around the mid-level of the drug-trafficking hierarchy,” Judge Muscat said.

“By your early adulthood you had a history of drug-related offending. This offence is by far the most serious offending conduct that you have engaged in during your life.

“Dr White (psychologist) also reported that your mental health has deteriorated significantly over recent times. I would not be surprised about that given the sentence that will be imposed upon you in a moment.”

He sentenced Remment to four years and nine months jail with a non-parole period of two years and six months.

Remment will be eligible for parole in 2027.
