Tyalgum Rd in the Tweed Shire has finally been reopened 20 months after a landslip caused by the devastating 2022 floods.

The massive landslip washed a portion of the road into the Oxley River on February 28 last year, stranding Tyalgum residents.

A temporary access road through the landslip site near the village was opened in both directions under traffic light controls on October 30.

The badly damaged section of road left residents of the hinterland village no choice but to travel a longer route via Chillingham, which added at least 15-20 minutes to their trip each day.

The cracks in Tyalgum Rd were taller than a person in some places.

Tweed Shire Council Mayor Chris Cherry said it was a relief for everyone to see the road reopened.

“The repair of the extreme landslip just outside of Tyalgum is the biggest and most complex of all of our restoration jobs in the Tweed following last year’s devastating flood,” she said.

“But thankfully, we will see cars, motorbikes and bicycles travel through this important community connector road once again.

The council’s manager infrastructure delivery Tim Mackney has warned heavy rainfall could cause more movement on the slopes in the area.

It could be temporarily closed to traffic in the event of detected movement or heavy rainfall in the coming months, while permanent repairs are undertaken.

“Council understands the frustrations endured by the Tyalgum community since Tyalgum Rd’s closure early last year and appreciates the resilience shown by individuals and businesses while waiting for the temporary road access,” he said.

The council will advise the community of any need to temporarily close the road.

In March, local contractor SEE Civil Pty Ltd was appointed to undertake the major restoration project and remains on-site for the permanent work.

The road is due to open without restrictions by March 2025, weather permitting and pending final approvals.
