State Crime Command Homicide Squad called in after man dies in custody at Casino Police Station in northern NSW

A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man was arrested and died inside a northern NSW police station today.

The Homicide Squad has launched a critical incident investigation after a man died in police custody following his arrest in northern NSW.

Richmond Police District responded to reports a man had been assaulted at Casino Showground on Summerland Way in Casino just after 11am on Sunday.

It’s alleged that on arrival a 48-year-old man “assaulted a police officer” before he was arrested and taken to Casino Police Station, about 30km southwest of Lismore.

“While in custody, the man became unconscious,” according to a NSW Police statement.

“Despite the efforts of responding police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man died in custody.”

The State Crime Command Homicide Squad will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Police have promised the investigation will be subject to an independent review.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
