Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives have allegedly busted a 53-year-old man with a loaded sawn-off shotgun after a botched armed service station holdup in the Tweed Shire.
NSW Police have released footage of the arrest of Michael George White after the gunpoint robbery at the Tweed Valley Way, Murwillumbah shop about 2.50pm on October 24.
White now faces a slew of allegations, including manufacturing drugs.
A mum and her teen son were behind the counter when a man wearing a face mask, alleged to be White, shot at the roof – and the woman courageously ran to confront him.
Police state the robber fled empty-handed in a white Holden Colorado ute and officers tried to stop the car on Byangum Rd.
It’s alleged a pursuit began, but was quickly terminated shortly due to safety concerns.
Tweed/Byron Police District released CCTV images and appealed for public assistance to track down the culprit.
The man in the images was shown wearing a white shirt with a black chest motif, black pants, a blue face mask, red Coca-Cola bucket hat and white Nike sneakers.
The ute, meanwhile, had no number plates attached and appeared to have damage to its left side.
The State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad has been working under Strike Force Barfield.
Detectives and the Tactical Operations Unit raided a Murwillumbah property about 9am on Tuesday.
It’s alleged officers found and seized a loaded sawn-off shotgun, ammunition and a vehicle of interest.
White was arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
He has been charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm, manufacturing a prohibited drug and four “other firearm related offences”, police state.
White was refused bail to face Tweed Heads Local Court on Wednesday.
White did not apply for bail in the court and it was formally refused.
His case was adjourned to January 22.
