The murder case against a man who allegedly killed his estranged wife at a Sunshine Coast resort has stalled because of delays caused by Queensland Health, a court has been told.

The ongoing murder case of beloved mother Vanessa Godfrey remains in limbo, as the lawyer representing her estranged husband and accused killer reveals vital documents are still outstanding almost 12 months later.
Bli Bli man Jeffrey James Godfrey, now 52, faces one charge of murder (domestic violence) after his wife Vanessa Godfrey, 46, was found dead in a Pelican Waters resort hotel room on Valentine’s Day, 2022.
The couple were legally married and shared adult children, although Ms Godfrey was living at a separate address.
Mr Godfrey’s charge was suspended under the mental health act in May 2022 while he underwent assessments at a mental health treatment centre. He was later returned to custody but is yet to enter a plea.
Lawyer Kylie Anderson told Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday, March 3 she was still waiting for a report of her client’s psychic evaluation. Mr Godfrey did not appear in court.
“I have followed up with Queensland Health every month (for) about the last three or four months,” she said.
“At this point, we don’t even have the first report.”
Mr Godfrey has been in custody for 13 months, the court was told.
“Terrible. What a broken system,” Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said.
“If he’s found unfit (mentally), it’s terrible he’s not in a hospital.”
The matter will return to the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on September 1, 2023.
