Ipswich SHS’s best 12 who had blinders in round three of Langer, Walters Cup competition

Who were Ipswich SHS’s best players from the round three of the Langer Trophy, Walters Cup and Langer Reserve competitions? We name 12 ripping young talents here.

The next time we will see the young rugby league talents of Ipswich State High School will be on July 12 with round four action.

So, before the one-month hiatus, let’s look back on the boys who shone in round three action across the Langer Trophy, Walters Cup and Langer Reserve competitions.

Here are the 12 stars:

Langer Trophy

Centre Caleb Jackson

Jackson was given room to move on the Dolphin Stadium turf on Wednesday night and made the most of it.

Jersey No.3 did a bit of everything down the right edge, diving over to score and finding his teammates in support to execute some flashy plays.

Everytime Jackson had the ball in hand he threatened Redcliffe SHS’s defensive line, and made them pay.

Hooker Tommy Luhrman

Luhrman’s first half try scoring spree on Wednesday encapsulated Ipswich SHS’s promising start to their Langer Trophy campaign.

He was rewarded for his consistent efforts in the first two games of the season, and in his team’s final game for almost a month, he got the Ipswich faithfuls up off their seats as he tore Redcliffe apart with his support running.

Whenever there was a break away, Luhrman was lurking.

A first half double for the dummy-half was one of the feel-good moments of the season.

Centre Anton Naiyep

Naiyep was the opposition’s biggest nuisance once again.

You are never safe when Naiyep has the ball in hands and a head full of steam.

The last try in Ipswich’s 46-6 blitzing of redcliffe was a try of the year contender by the No.4. Naiyep left his defender on the ground when he bursted away 60m for a miraculous try that only the video replay does justice.

Wing Joven Gyemore

Gyemore had his Langer Trophy debut on Wednesday night.

He scored a great try in the corner to give us a taste of what is to come from the Cherbourg speedstar.

Langer Reserves

Prop David Su’a

Su’a and Kolio worked in tandem on Wednesday afternoon to put Redcliffe SHS on the back foot in the first half.

It was his defence that shone, relentlessly putting the opposition on their backs set after set.

Lock Iosefa Kolio

Kolio crunched the Redcliffe players all afternoon on Wednesday to steer his team to a well deserved win.

Ipswich SHS’s first try coming through Dominic Dunn was all thanks to the shoulder of Kolio. He blitzed his opposition so hard the ball came loose, giving Ipswich the chance to score.

Not only was he destructive in defence but running up the middle he was a handful to bring down.

Indeed he can kick too, slotting conversions all afternoon from around the park.

Second rower Isaac Togia

Togia was an absolute beast for the Ipswich SHS Langer reserve team on Wednesday.

Redciffe stood no chance when Togia had a full head of steam. His step and subsequent leg drive saw him barge through his first defender every time he ran the ball.

A great grubber kick from his five eighth Brandon Tikinau set up Togia for his team’s second try of the game.

Five eighth Brandon Tikinau:

Tikinau was instrumental on Wednesday with his playmaking.

There was no shortage of try assists next to the No.6’s name, with some pinpoint grubbering and bullet cut out passing putting his teammates in virtually untouched throughout Ipswich SHS’s Langer reserve game against Redcliffe SHS.

Wing Jamal Laurie

Jamal Laurie on the wing, with a 90m intercept try the highlight of his efforts in Wednesday’s Langer reserve game.

Laurie was electric on the right edge. With the ball in hand he looked dangerous.

His nippy step and positioning allowed him to pounce. Whether it was making metres, scoring tries or his on-the-spot decision making, he looked very sharp.

Centre Jeriah Vagana

Vagana earned himself a hat-trick in the centres when carving up with ball in hand on Wednesday night against Redcliffe SHS.

He was always in the action and he had to work for his tries. They weren’t just given to him.

His third of the day saw him shrug off and step his way past his prey to put the cherry on top of a mammoth win over Redcliffe.

Vagana took his red-hot form on Wednesday to his Friday night game for Goodna in U17 division 1 club rugby league.

Vagana was strong once again, however this time it was his efforts in the five-eighth position that helped his team to victory.

Prop Mafiou Cherif

The way Cherif plays is beautiful to watch. He is full of heart, and puts in 100% when doing the dirty work for his Walters Cup rugby league team that can’t get it to click.

He is everywhere at once. Making courageous tackles and taking storming runs up the middle is this kid’s forte. Although, on the field he looks more like a man among boys.

He’s strong and skilled with a great level of game awareness. He has the knowledge of the game and gives his all every time he puts on his Ipswich SHS jersey. Especially on defence.

Lock Carlos Bagon

Cherif found Bagon barging onto the ball in the opening minutes of Wednesday’s round three Walters Cup game against Caloundra.

Bagon was dominant. When running into contact he didn’t shy away from the collision. He powered his way through tackles and worked tirelessly to advance his team up the field.

Indeed his speed and agility is one of the underrated aspects to his game as at No.13, he was blasting through the line, eager to put Caloundra on the back foot.
