“Like old times” and “finally” were words on everyone’s lips as anglers, walkers, holiday makers and others took to Boambee Creek footbridge to use a popular dog beach for the first time since February.
Maintenance work by City of Coffs Harbour council and the Australian Rail Track Corporation on the Boambee Creek Bridge and footbridge below prevented keen beachgoers and dog walkers from accessing the pristine waters and off leash area at Boambee Beach.
On Wednesday, the footbridge which runs under the railway bridge was opened, despite some work still to be completed.
Visiting couple John Haigh and Judy Wood said they were delighted the footbridge was open and they could squeeze in a walk before returning home to Newcastle.
“I used to have a little dog. He’s passed away now, but he used to like walking here and having a run around,” Ms Wood said.
“But we’re happy to see the footbridge open because it’s so great for the dog people.”
While Tod Williams from Manly has visited the Boambee Creek reserve many times, he said he did not realise there was a footbridge connecting both sides of the bay.
“I thought ‘wow, there’s all these people over there on that side’ and I thought ‘how do you get there apart from swimming?’. So I started walking and came across the footbridge and just look at the water – amazing.”
Of course, it’s not just humans loving the golden sands – it’s the dogs from the area as well.
Pooch Tashi evidently could not be happier to get a run in on his favourite beach.
