North Harbour Marina: Calls for state government to fast track approval of multi-billion dollar Moreton development

A proposed southeast Queensland marina could inject hundreds of millions of dollars into the local economy, with developers and the council urging the state government to fast track the project’s approval.

A proposed “world-class landmark” marina north of Brisbane could provide $880 million into the Moreton Bay economy every year.

Developers behind a multi-billion dollar North Harbour Marina project in Burpengary East have urged the Queensland Government to listen to a council fast track proposal.

The proposed marina in will create $882 million worth of economic activity annually and create thousands of jobs.

On Wednesday, the Moreton Bay Regional Council unanimously called for the state government to declare the Burpengary East North Harbour Marina a Priority Development Area.

Moreton Bay mayor Peter Flannery said the project could help the region recover from the coronavirus pandemic downturn.

“At a time when jobs and growth have never been more important for southeast Queensland, this is a tangible way the Queensland Government can help Moreton Bay with a plan to deliver certainty of work for years to come,” he said.

The declaration would allow for approvals to be completed within two years.

The $2.74 billion North Harbour proposal would create 7735 jobs during construction and includes a 400-berth marina with associated marine industries and a substantial marina village with retail, tourism and entertainment uses.

Under current plans the precinct would also provide 600 new apartments 600 detached homes as part of the marina village, 800 dwellings in a canal estate, and 319 hectares of recreational and regional open space.

North Harbour project director Bryan Finney said the marina would be an ‘economic and community game changer’ for the area.

“It will also provide 8.9 per cent of the new jobs needed in the Moreton Bay region, an ongoing $882 million annual economic contribution and the delay of $300 million in Unitywater infrastructure – a major saving for ratepayers,” he said.

“The North Harbour Marina PDA will be world-class landmark destination that advances the identity, ecological health and prosperity of southeast Queensland,” he said.

“The declaration of a PDA will also deliver additional huge benefits, including a marine industry boom that will attract a significant slice of Australia’s $68 billion marine industry to Moreton Bay.
