David Koch: Why this Mexican wedding will be different to Karl’s
Sunrise host David “Kochie” Koch has a Mexican wedding of his own coming up, but he’s keen to point out it will not be an Instagram-fest, in what seems to be a thinly disguised swipe at the recent nuptials of former TV rival Karl Stefanovic.

Yet another breakfast TV host has a Mexican wedding coming up — this time it’s Sunrise host David “Kochie” Koch.
Koch’s son Alexander is set to marry in Mexico later this year, just a few months after Kochie’s former breakfast TV rival Karl Stefanovic made headlines with his over-the-top four-day wedding extravaganza where he tied the knot with shoe designer Jasmine Yarbrough.
“I hate to say it, but it is a Mexican wedding, but it’s (there) because my son is marrying a Mexican, so that’s the reason we are having a Mexican wedding, which will be close to her family town,” the breakfast broadcaster told Confidential.
In what seemed like a veiled pop at Stefanovic, he added: “We’re not doing it for Instagram pictures or anything. We’re doing it because we’re going to have a Mexican daughter-in-law, so I keep emphasising that to everyone who asks where they are getting married.”
The 62-year-old and his wife Libby celebrated a milestone 40 years of marriage this week.
“Who would have thought? Overwhelmingly, the response has been that Libby deserves a medal, which I think is probably about right,” he laughed.

Opening up about why he and Libby have stayed together for four decades, Koch said it all came down to being realistic.
“I think one of the big issues is everyone thinks marriage is like a Mills and Boon novel, that it should be fantastic all the time.”
“Reality is, you do go through great highs and incredible lows, and with the lows, as Lib always says, you’ve got to remember why you fell in love with each other and you put that first.”
In regards to the recent Today show shuffle that saw the entire line-up, except Georgie Gardner, replaced, Koch remained diplomatic.
“They’re trying something different and I sort of put it in AFL language; they’re rebuilding their team, they’ve gone to the draft for some new players … They are trying something new and we know they will do it well.”
Revealing his strategy for avoiding headlines and staying out of the spotlight, Koch said he attended minimal events and refused to get caught up in the “media bubble”.
“Media is such a bubble. It is so easy to start believing your own PR and thinking you’re different and thinking you’re special, and Lib really doesn’t give a toss about that and neither to the kids.
“My view is that because viewers get to know you so intimately, they don’t want to know you and what you’re doing outside of the show, so that’s why I don’t do many stories or anything like that because people get sick of you.”
