Aussie DJ gets ready to be the first trumpeter in space

Aussie DJ Timmy Trumpet is hoping to be the first trumpeter in space when he launches into the ether with the European Space Agency.

NASA lands on Mars

Aussie artist DJ Timmy Trumpet’s next gig will take his music out of this world — or zero gravity, at least.

“We go back overseas next week and one of our first shows is actually in space,” Timmy Trumpet, aka Tim Smith, told Confidential.

“We’re working with the European Space Agency, it’s kind of like Germany’s NASA, and myself and a couple of other DJs who are like my idols are taking off to space.”

Those idols include Armin van Buuren, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Steve Aoki, who will all undergo medical checks and formal training before their rave mission.

And while Timmy says he’s going into space, he’s not actually going there — but into a converted A310 aircraft which performs special manoeuvres to achieve zero gravity — a process used for astronaut training.

“I’ve got to go and see a doctor here and get a test just to make sure my heart is OK and then from there, they wanted four days of training, but because we’re all so busy with our itineraries, we’ve got it down to one so, hopefully, I can learn everything I need to know,” he laughed.

“They’ve said yes to taking the trumpet up, so I’ll be the first trumpeter which is kind of cool.”

The son of a trumpeter, Smith first picked up the instrument when he was four years old and now plays at some of the most famous festivals in Europe and the US, including Tomorrowland.

Although he was teased at school, he’s arguably responsible for making the brass apparatus cool.

“It was definitely nerdy, I got paid out a lot,” he said. “It’s still one of those things where people don’t think it’s cool and I want to contribute to this culture by telling musicians they should do what I’m doing.”

Recently dropping a new single called Wassup, Smith said this is the first song his mum has approved.

“Wassup is kind of a return to my roots of house music and what got me into deejaying. I think it’s a good time to return to happy music … a lot of my other music is quite aggressive so it’s a good change up. Even my mum likes it,” Smith laughed. “She calls it doof doof music, but she likes this one.”
