Bikies in Australia: A short history

TWO former Sydney bikies have been charged with killing one of their own club members — Rebels enforcer Michael “Ruthless” Davey — two years ago.

Abuzar Sultani, known as Abs or “the Afghan’’, made a brief appearance in Goulburn court on Tuesday charged with murder. His co-accused, Siar Munshizada, appeared in Burwood court also charged with Davey’s murder.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad set up Strike Force Glenorchy to investigate Davey’s murder soon after he was gunned down outside his home in Kingswood in 2016.

He was allegedly shot while he stood in his driveway just after midnight on March 30, 2016.

The strike force was boosted by the inclusion of officers from Strike Force Raptor, a specialist anti-bike unit and officers from the Drug and Firearms Squad.

Police said the arrests of the two men followed extensive investigation into Mr Davey’s death including his links to bikie gangs and other criminal activities.

The two men, both aged 29, were both members of the Burwood chapter of the Rebels.

Sulanti was refused bail and ordered to reappear in Goulburn Court on September 17 via video link.

Munshizada was also refused bail and is to appear before Burwood Court on October 31.

The Rebel bikies gang was rocked by the murder of Davey, 30, considered a senior member of the gang.

His death came after one of his associates and fellow Rebel biker Mark Easter, 37, was murdered the year before. His bullet-ridden body was found in bushland north of Sydney in June 2015. His murder remains unsolved despite extensive police inquiries.

Davey was a well-known bikie and criminal identity around Sydney, having been jailed as a 17-year-old for manslaughter for the bashing death of a teenager at Emu Plains in 2002.

For the next decade he was in and out of jail for a series of violent crimes and built a reputation as a violent and ruthless enforcer.

He survived an attempt on his life in 2015 when his Hilux ute was shot at while he was in a Penrith shopping centre car park.

The brush with death did little to slow him down. He posted on his Instagram account: “I came into this world kick’n n scream’n while covered in some 1 else’s blood no I’m not afraid of leaving the same way” alongside symbols of guns and explosions.

The Rebels posted a tribute on their Sydney Facebook page shortly after news of the gangland slaying

“It’s with deep regret and sadness I bring the news of Micky D’s passing this morning,” the post reads.

“On behalf of the club I offer our sincere condolences to the Davey family on this tragic loss.

“You will be truly missed brother you were one of a kind. May you ride in the Forever Chapter. RIP R.F.F.R.”

Dozens of Rebels bikies wearing club colours attended the funeral of the murdered gang member.

The slain bikie was taken from a chapel on a sidecar with a masked rider rolling in a solemn procession of thundering Harley Davidsons.

Davey was laid to rest at Pinegrove Cemetery in western Sydney, as police vans parked on the main road outside the cemetery complex.

Six plain clothes officers also filmed and took photographs from the hill above the precession, while Rebels bikies were at check points around the memorial gardens as a security measure.
