High-ranking Rebels member Chris Rymer pays tribute to fallen bikie brother Michael ‘Ruthless’ Davey

HIGH-RANKING Rebels members Chris Rymer and Michael “Ruthless” Davey were brothers bonded by the outlaw bikie code - until Davey, 30, was gunned down in his driveway, reportedly by members of his own brotherhood after trying to leave the gang.

Bikies in Australia: A short history

HIGH-RANKING Rebels members Chris Rymer and Michael “Ruthless” Davey were brothers and best mates bonded by the outlaw bikie code.

But everything changed two years ago when Davey, 30, was gunned down in his driveway, reportedly by members of his own brotherhood after trying to leave the gang.

At the time of the underworld execution, Rymer and seven other Rebels were incarcerated, awaiting trial for the 2014 kidnap and 36-hour torture of a former gang leader.

The murder of the so-called “Prince of Penrith” left Rymer devastated, with the senior Rebels member publicly mourning the loss of his bikie brother since being acquitted and released from Silverwater jail before Christmas last year.

Rymer’s most recent tribute to the fallen bikie is a custom-built diamond encrusted pendant containing Micky D’s initials in the middle of a crown, which closely resembles the tattoo on the right-hand side of his face.

The Rebels member shared a picture of the tribute on his Instagram account with the caption: “RIP MY BRA! RuthlessMD @ruthlessmd miss ya”.

The sentimental pendant has since been attached to a long silver chain, with Rymer photographed wearing it multiple times since first showcasing the item.

He has also made the image of the custom-built jewellery his Instagram display picture.

His tributes to the slain gangster have also become more permanent, with the heavily inked-up bikie adding to his extensive tattoo collection in remembrance.

Rymer proudly showcased his new artwork, which has “RIP MD” written in bold letters on his head behind his left ear.

“MISS U EVERYDAY MY BROTHER. Words can’t explain! Wish u were still here with us and your boys! #bestmate #loyalty #seeyouontheotherside #loveya,” Rymer wrote in an Instagram post showcasing the fresh ink.

Since being released, Rymer has also visited the gravesite of his bikie brother numerous times and shared pictures of the man he described as a “true soldier” and his “best mate”.

The pair had a long history, which extended past the high-profile killing of Davey.

Earlier this year, Rymer faced court for attacking another inmate, who is awaiting trial on a high profile murder, in the visits section of the vast Metropolitan remand jail at the Silverwater facility.

His lawyer told Burwood Court that his client had lashed out at the prisoner because he believed the inmate was involved with the gangland killing of Micky D.

When the inmate saw Rymer approaching him, he put out his hand for Rymer to shake.

Instead, Rymer punched the man hard in the chin with a closed fist and then kicked him in the head and chest before prison officers restrained him.

“It’s unprovoked … You see him punch then kick him in the face,” police prosecutor Sergeant Carter told the court.

Rymer’s solicitor Adam Williams argued his client, who pleaded guilty to common assault over the Silverwater attack, had barely touched the victim.

“The assault itself was very brief … It’s not clear that they actually connected,” Mr Williams said. He explained his client “lost control of his emotions” after seeing the man.

Following the assault, Rymer himself was the victim of a bloody attack in which he was stabbed repeatedly in Pod 13 at Silverwater.

“On the 15th of March he was assaulted by two persons, he was stabbed nine times,” Mr Williams told the court.

Rymer suffered nine puncture wounds to his back and grazes on his nose and forehead.

A prison report revealed that prior to the stabbing a jail hit was put out on Rymer in retaliation for the visits attack.

The Silverwater prison governor received intelligence that four days after Rymer assaulted the inmate in visits, “a hit had been arranged” on him “reportedly for $250,000”.

Mr Williams asked Magistrate Joy Boulos to consider Rymer had already been punished for the Silverwater attack, via the retaliatory stabbing and the fact it resulted in a second period in protective custody from which the bikie had requested release.

“I am aware that prisoners do not like to be under protective custody as opposed to segregated custody as they can be labelled as informer or weak,” the governor’s report said.

Ms Boulos rejected Mr William’s argument, but agreed Mr Rymer’s personal situation had changed since the 2016 attack.

This included the fact he was due to start work with a scaffolding firm this week and his partner of ten years was expecting their second child.

She sentenced him to six months jail but backdated it to the time of the offence, meaning he had already served his time by June 5, 2017, while on remand for other charges.

Davey was well known to police, with the then-17-year-old first jailed for manslaughter over the brutal bashing of a teenager in Emu Plains in 2002.

He was released in October 2006 and then had been in and out jail since 2009.

The Rebels member was also involved in another shooting in April 2015 when his Toyota Hilux was shot at in a Penrith shopping centre carpark. He was not injured and a 24-year-old was arrested in relation to that incident.

Davey’s close call did little to scare him, with his Instagram account bio including the statement: “I came into this world kick’n n scream’n while covered in some 1 else’s blood no I’m not afraid of leavin the same way” alongside a gun and explosion emojis.

On March 31, 2016, Davey met his demise when he was shot multiple times just after 12am in a driveway more than 100m from where he was living with his girlfriend Sky.

His girlfriend said Davey received a phone call from a “friend” prompting him to go outside before he was shot.

Neighbours reported hearing as many as six shots before a car sped off, with Davey unable to be revived by paramedics at the scene.

A man who had only moved into the house two weeks ago, Richard, said it was a gruesome scene.

“There was a lot of blood. You could see his tattoos. I’d say he tried to run away from the scene and used my fence and car as a bit of protection,” he said at the time.

“It is very shocking. It looked liked he’d been shot in the chest. He didn’t knock on the door for help or anything, it must have been full on.”

Police investigated the possibility a Rebels bikie member turned on him in the hours before his death.

According to the Sun-Herald, Davey had been looking to get out of the bikie fraternity, which detectives say may have been reason enough for his assassination.

Despite rumours of the outlaw motorcycle club’s involvement, the Rebels posted a tribute on their Sydney Facebook page shortly after news of the gangland slaying.

“It’s with deep regret and sadness I bring the news of Micky D’s passing this morning,” the post reads.

“On behalf of the club I offer our sincere condolences to the Davey family on this tragic loss.

“You will be truly missed brother you were one of a kind. May you ride in the Forever Chapter. RIP R.F.F.R.”

While Rymer and Davey’s other compatriots mourned his murder from behind bars, dozens of Rebels bikies wearing club colours attended the funeral of the murdered gang member.

The slain bikie was taken from a chapel on a sidecar with a masked rider rolling in a solemn procession of thundering Harley Davidsons.

Davey was laid to rest at Pinegrove Cemetery in western Sydney, as police vans parked on the main road outside the cemetery complex.

Six plain clothes officers also filmed and took photographs from the hill above the precession, while Rebels bikies were at check points around the memorial gardens as a security measure.
