A woman is in hospital in a critical condition and a second woman is in police custody following a fight at Tweed Heads on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District have been told the incident began with two women, aged 37 and 48, arguing at a Seymour Street address about 1.40pm.

The women had moved to an outside area where the younger woman allegedly assaulted the older woman, knocking her to the ground, stabbing her several times, then running away.

Officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command arrived and provided first aid to the injured woman before she was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Police have been told she is in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

As first described, a crime scene has been set up on Seymour Street.

NSW Ambulance media confirmed a female suffering stab wounds was treated.

Bystander Peter Davey of Tweed Heads said: “A bunch of cop cars are 500 metres from where my kids ride their bikes and we walk through there all the time”.

Police officers were inside a residence, and have confirmed it is an ongoing operation.

It’s believed children from a daycare centre in the vicinity were sent home as the investigation unfolded, and the street was blocked to traffic.
