A new survey has revealed 38 per cent of trucks driving on Dulguigan Road were speeding at least 10km/h above the speed limit.

The report was tabled at the latest Tweed Shire Council meeting which shows speeds recorded by council officers in the first quarter of 2021.

The road was reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h on January 31, 2020 following a request from the council to Transport NSW, with a special speed of 60 km/h speed limit for trucks and buses along the quarry route.

During the May 20 meeting Councillor James Owen said the issue had been brought up with police who frequently patrolled the road.

“As soon as the police rock up the trucks get on the radio and tell all the trucks they’re there,” Mr Owen said.

“Police do patrol the area quite regularly but the trucks have a method of communicating, only one or two trucks are caught.”

Councillors discussed the possibility of using mobile radar cameras however Mr Owen advised the cameras could not differentiate a truck licence plate from a car licence plate and would not work due to the varied speed limits.

Councillor Pryce Allsop said there were other roads that he believed needed more police presence than Dulguigan road.

“I think we are giving this a lot of consideration compared with roads with far greater traffic flows where speeders effect other drivers,” Mr Allsop said.

He suggested Kyogle Road and Tweed Valley Way saw far more traffic and had bigger issues with speeding.

The council resolved to accepted the Dulguigan Road Traffic Survey report and to request the report be automatically referred to the Local Traffic Committee for their consideration on how to address the ongoing speeding concerns.
