Fingerprints found on a stolen vehicle more than 30km away from where it was taken led police to arrest a teenager.

Jordan Whitelock, 19, appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court on November 24 where he was sentenced for larceny and attempting to dispose of property stolen outside of New South Wales.

According to court papers a Mazda CX7 was taken from Dixon Street in Coolangatta sometime between 5pm on March 1 and 7.30am on March 2.

The next day the car was located on River Street, Murwillumbah where police took fingerprints and DNA was examined which matched Whitelock.

Whitelock found himself in trouble again when he was caught stealing three coke bottles and a Gatorade - to a total value of $21.60 - from the BP on Kennedy Drive alongside a juvenile co-accused.

Whitelock’s lawyer told the court this was his client’s first time in custody.

He said Whitelock had a serious dirt bike accident where he had a brain bleed and since then had a shift in personality where he had a “trajectory towards destructive behaviour.”

The court heard Whitelock had been kicked out of the family home after taking items and selling them at cash converters which left him homeless.

The defence asked the court to consider his client’s lowered culpability because of these factors.

Magistrate Geoff Dunlevy noted the offences breached a community corrections order which he revoked.

Whitelock was convicted and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment backdated to April 13 and a two year community corrections order with supervision.
