A Tweed Hospital nurse facing a number of child abuse offences will defend his charges at a hearing later this year.

Eddy Viegas, 51, had his matter mentioned in Tweed Heads Local Court on January 14, where he was not required to appear.

He faces four counts of intentionally sexually touching a child between 10 and 16 and two counts of aggravated incitement of a child between 10 and 16 to do a sexual act to them.

It is alleged he touched a child on two occasions in 2021.

It is further alleged he intentionally incited a child to carry out a sexual act with or towards him.

His solicitor entered not guilty pleas to all the charges on Friday.

He asked to adjourn the matter to a date in December however Magistrate Annette Sinclair said she would not adjourn a matter involving a child witness for a year.

Ms Sinclair said it was in Viegas’s best interest to have the matter on as early as possible as court officers worked to find a date for hearing the solicitor and court were available.

Arrangements were made for a special fixture to be heard in Lismore on November 1, 2 and 3 with an additional magistrate from Sydney to be flown up for the hearing.

Viegas remains on bail.
