Brothers from the Tweed have been sentenced in court after they bashed their sister’s alleged abuser in a home invasion, leaving a pool of blood and blood-spattered walls in their wake.

Reid Gibbon Shipway, 32, and Aiden Gibbon Shipway, 25, faced Lismore District Court on Wednesday.

They pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated breaking and entering, committing a serious indictable offence and assault occasioning actual bodily harm while in company.

The older sibling from Pottsville in the Tweed and the younger sibling from Mount Warren Park in Logan, Queensland broke into a Kingscliff home occupied by four people and beat the 28-year-old victim on February 19 last year.

The attack happened at a Kingscliff home in the north of the Tweed Shire.

He was sleeping on the couch of a friend’s home after breaking up with the sister.

The court heard the brothers believed the 28-year-old committed domestic violence against their sister, the victim supposedly admitted to as much in a text conversation with Reid Shipway.

The older brother and the victim agreed to meet up and “sort it out like men”.

Following the conversation, the brothers travelled to the Kingscliff home and kicked the door in.

The victim woke, but the brothers rushed him before he could rise from the couch to defend himself.

The Shipways punched the man at least 20 times – leaving a pool of blood on the floor and splattered on the walls, Judge Jennifer English told the court.

Other people inside the house rushed in and jumped into the fray.

The Shipway brothers started fighting the other housemates, but were chased off with a golf club.

The brothers later handed themselves into police and were charged.

Judge English said the brothers taking “justice into their own hands” was “unacceptable”.

But she found their actions were out of character and both of the Shipways presented a low risk of reoffending.

Judge English said the pair had “excellent” prospects of rehabilitation.

The brothers were each sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order, two year intensive corrections order and 200 hours of community service.
