A hearing date has been set for a former NRL star who is set to defend drug, weapon and assault charges.
Former Cowboys, Sharks and Roosters player, Anthony David Watts, had his matter mentioned in Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday by lawyer Thomas Mohun.
Watts was not required to appear.
Mr Mohun entered not guilty pleas to charges of using an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, threaten injury to a person with intent to commit an indictable offence, go armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, possess or attempt to possess steroid agent and seven counts of possessing a prohibited drug.
Watts has previously pleaded not guilty to using a carriage service to threaten to kill, common assault, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and go armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
The 35-year-old, who was living in Murwillumbah at the time, was alleged to have possessed seven types of steroids including testosterone, trenbolone acetate, nandrolone, 80 tablets of methandienone, 70 tablets of stanozolol and 28 tablets of oxymetholone.
Police allege Watts was displaying “controlling and threatening behaviour” towards his ex-girlfriend and sent a series of text messages to her between October 10 and 19, 2021, allegedly writing “I’m ready for war”, “That’s alright just kill u n go manslaughter”, “Go die I hate you so much n I regret meeting you” and “Now I see why husbands kill there (sic) partners”.
It is further alleged Watts attended a gym owner’s home in his car and demanded he cancel his ex-girlfriend’s gym membership before allegedly unveiling a silver-barrelled handgun under a towel on his front seat.
Watts remains in custody on remand and has not applied for bail.
The matter will next be before the court on September 1 for hearing.
