TONI Cameron said her father would be “chuffed” to see the Jack Evans Boat Harbour returned to the family-friendly community hub she remembered as a child.

As she gazed across the newly upgraded harbour, Ms Cameron reflected on the life of a champion lifesaver, entrepreneur, dolphin trainer and community hero, after whom the harbour was named.

Her father Jack Evans was a community icon who first moved to the Coolangatta Tweed area after World War 2 to find a harbour swimming with sharks.

He saved hundreds of lives, netted the harbour to make it safe for swimmers, opened the iconic Jack Evans porpoise pool, raised a family and charmed a community before his death in 2002.

Now his legacy will be protected with an $8 million upgrade to make the precinct the community hub he intended it to be.

“He'd be very happy to see the harbour looking like this,” Ms Cameron said.

“It's so community minded and the perfect thing to name Dad after.”

The revamped harbour will be officially launched on Sunday, July 24 with a Family Fun Day coinciding with the beginning of Local Government Week.

Tweed Shire Council Mayor Kevin Skinner said the day would be the perfect opportunity to officially open the harbour.

“Our annual Family Fun Day is getting bigger and better every year,” Cr Skinner said.

“This year is very exciting as we host it at the recently upgraded Jack Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads.

“This is a great opportunity to highlight the benefits of a fantastic precinct and show off its abilities to not just be a great community space but a high-calibre events venue as well.”

Cr Skinner said Local Government Week would be kicked off at the Family Fun Day and events would continue throughout the week.

“The name Local Government Week may not mean much to people but it gives us a chance to highlight the important role council plays in the community,” he said.
