Tweed Shire Council has awarded a $16 million contract to repair a massive landslip which cut off the village of Tyalgum and rural properties in the wake of the 2022 floods.

SEE Civil Pty Ltd, based at Helensvale, has been named as the contractor following a lengthy tendering process.

Another $4 million will be spent on land acquisition and site work, bringing the total cost of the landslip repair to $20 million, the council stated.

Tweed Mayor Chris Cherry said the landslip was the biggest and most complex caused by the floods.

She said the announcement was a significant milestone in the Tweed’s recovery.

“I know the Tyalgum community has been frustrated by the time it has taken to get to this stage – and the inconvenience caused by the severed roadway – and I thank them for their patience,” she said.

“Now we have this contract in place, SEE Civil will be able to continue the process of designing and working on restoring our road network in a manner that will make it more resilient and able to better deal with the challenges of future natural disasters and climate change.”

Designs are expected to be released in late May, with works commencing soon after.

SEE Civil’s work is expected to include the provision of temporary access through the Tyalgum Rd site, due to be in place later this year.

SEE Group Executive Director Joel Barnes said: “Following the floods and unprecedented damage across northern NSW and southeast Queensland in 2022, our project teams have launched a number of recovery projects in both states to reconnect communities severed by the damage.”

Discover Tyalgum owner Brad Sims said the announcement was a huge relief for the town, despite the wait for the project to be completed.

“It‘s a relief for locals to know the extra driving hours and time wasted is coming to an end,” he said.

“We’ll all get our normal lives back … While we‘re not there yet, everyone will be happy to see the work is starting.”
