The motormouth con-man who allegedly duped Jarryd Hayne out of $780,000, and is accused of performing the same trick on a large number of dangerous inmates, is due for his first chance of release.

But the big question is whether Ishan Seenar Sappideen would be better served staying in jail.

We hear there’s a few people (not including Hayne who is not accused of any wrongdoing) who want to catch up with him.

That’s a question that will be addressed on August 27 when Sappideen fronts the State Parole Board to see if he will be released when he ticks over his minimum prison sentence check point.

Sappideen is an interesting case.

The former Sydney Grammar student and Eastern Suburbs finance worker is serving a maximum 12 year sentence for fleecing $4.6 million from friends and family in a Ponzi scheme.

In more eloquent terms, sentencing Judge Mark Williams SC told the court Sappideen is a gold medal worthy Olympic level bullshit artist.

“I stress that it is difficult to fully appreciate this young man’s confident presentation and his ability to express himself without actually seeing him,” Judge Williams told the court.

And it appears he put those skills to use behind bars — which tells you something about his skills because inmates were allegedly handing him their money without his multiple fraud convictions serving as a red flag.

He allegedly told the ex NRL star and other inmates that he had collected $290 million alongside Aussie billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes and could earn them similar returns if they arranged for cash to be transferred to his agent on the outside.

The other alleged victims included a former senior bikie and a man linked to the Hamzy crime family who were all in Cooma Prison with Sappiddine alongside Hayne.

Hayne has since been released from jail after winning an appeal against his rape conviction.

Correctives put Sappideen in protective custody and referred the allegation to NSW Police.

We’ll see if it counts against Sappideen’s chances for release.

RESERVOIR DUDS

You gotta love a dumb crook.

Yesterday we published the story of Mark Horne’s three hour detour to an armed robbery after the cops pulled him over on the way to the heist because his getaway car was unregistered.

The dark comedy in the dialogue recorded by the cops in the exchange put it on the level of something from a Quentin Tarantino movie.

And there was more of it when Horne and co finally made it to the truck they were trying to steal $600,000 in drug money from in September 2020.

The golden rule for crooks wearing balaclavas to protect their identities during robberies is to not use anyone’s real name.

But that didn’t stop one of Horne’s offsiders when he ask for a torch to access a secret compartment under the truck where the money was hidden.

The truck driver later told police that the offsider, who had the truckie on the ground at gunpoint, announced, “Hey Lee, I’ve got one over here”.

According to court documents, the other man at the scene he was talking to, known as “Man 2” or “Lee”, said, “You f…king dumb c..t. Why’d you say that?”.

Maybe go with Mr Pink next time.

IT’S CALLED MEDIATION, LOOK IT UP

Sydney fashion icon Karin Upton-Baker has been ordered into mediation in an attempt to settle her million dollar dispute with Kennards storage that cost her a $12,000 “large antler chandelier” among other luxury items.

The NSW Supreme Court has ordered the two parties to attend a mediation session on Ausgust 30 to see if they avoid the case going to courtroom warfare.

Ms Upton-Baker sued Kennards claiming it was responsible for more than $1 million worth of her prized luxury goods to be water damaged at its South Sydney facility in 2016.

The long-time managing director of luxury fashion house Hermes Australia and ex editor of fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, provided the court with a list of 141 luxury items allegedly damaged that included “Christian Dior silk skirt and bustier” from 1990 that was designed by famed Italian fashion designer Gianfranco Ferre, worth $25,000.

There was also a “taxidermy of a small sea turtle” worth $1000.

Kennards is defending the case and has claimed the fashion boss’s ex husband, Gary Baker, “specifically elected not to take out insurance in respect of those goods” when signing up for the storage space.
