Hundreds of metres worth of rail tracks running deep under Sydney Harbour for the driverless Metro City and Southwest have been complete — as construction on Barangaroo station’s platforms gets underway.
More than 2400 railway sleepers and 4200 tonnes of concrete work has been completed in the twin tunnels stretching from Chatswood to the Sydney CBD.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said services for Sydney’s second driverless Metro would launch in 2024.

“Sydney Metro will transform the way we travel around our great city — the trip deep under Sydney Harbour will take just three minutes between the new Barangaroo Station and Victoria Cross Station at North Sydney,” he said.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Rob Stokes described the twin rail tunnels under the harbour as “historic”.
“It’s incredible to think of the hard work that is going into this project,” he said.
“Eventually more than 4,000 tonnes of Australian steel will be used for the 31 kilometres of tracks from Chatswood to Sydenham, including 200 tonnes under the Harbour.”
A further 300 construction jobs will now be generated to fit out the expansive caverns to be transformed into Barangaroo Station.
Metro trains will start running through the harbour tunnels in 2024, extending the North West Metro into the city and beyond to Bankstown.
New stations are being constructed at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo, along with new underground platforms at Central Station.
