Racing NSW will run equine training courses at the Scone TAFE facility after purchasing the site for $4 million.
Skills and Tertiary Education Minister Geoff Lee announced the sale, which was opposed by Labor, on Tuesday morning.
“The site of 2 Flemington Drive will continue to deliver world-class equine training locally,” Dr Lee said.
Dr Lee said the revenue from the sale will go to other teaching and learning facilities in the region.
“The new TAFE NSW Scone Connected Learning Centre has boosted local training
available by offering a wide range of new and in-demand courses,” he said.
The Minister said TAFE NSW had “bought and sold” sites across the state for “more than 130 years”.
Racing NSW boss Peter V’landys described the sale as a win-win, saying the site’s current use would be “significantly” expanded.
“Racing NSW will offer extensive courses for the thoroughbred racing industry,” he said.
Mr V’landys said Racing NSW “will also work with TAFE NSW and the local community to ensure there is the right mix of other courses available at the facility to provide the necessary skilled labour for the region”.
TAFE NSW has the rights to continue to deliver courses at 2 Flemington Drive for up to three years.
Managing Director Steffan Faurby said the sale will enable money to be spent on other learning facilities.
“Making changes like this ensures TAFE NSW can continue to provide local
communities right across the state with the latest learning technologies, in
contemporary, flexible environments,” he said.
Labor’s TAFE spokesman said it was a “disgraceful” decision to sell Scone TAFE “the day before a community Roundtable and Forum”.
