Paramedics treated the man before taking him to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.
Local officers, the dog squad and the police helicopter are now scouring the area for another man, believed to be his attacker.
They are focusing their search on the parklands in Horlyck Reserve, South Granville.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Jennine Kiely said paramedics found the man out the front of the block of units.
“On paramedics arrival, we treated one man with multiple stab wounds, then he was transported to Westmead in a critical condition,” she said.
“It was quite a disturbing scene when paramedics arrived because we were confronted with a man who had lost a lot of blood.
“We did everything we could to stabilise him before he was transported.”
Cumberland superintendent Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson implored the public who saw suspicious activity in Boronia or Clyde streets and Horlyck Reserve to come forward.
“Also, I want to take the opportunity to stress that whilst we are in the initial stages of our investigation, from the inquiries we’ve made so far, it tends to indicate that this incident is unlikely to be a random attack,’’ he said.
“I also want to make the point a number of resources have been used this morning to search the area for a person or persons involved around the Boronia St area … and surrounds.
“We’ve used a number of resources including PolAir, the Dog Unit and the Public Order and Riot Squad and this matter is currently an active police investigation.”
Police ruled out this morning’s incident was related to a man who was stabbed at nearby Clyde St yesterday.
