A solicitor who once acted for Salim Mehajer was arrested outside Manly Local Court in dramatic scenes on Wednesday afternoon.
Eidan Havas looked stunned as two police officers confronted him as he spoke to his client, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on the steps of the court.
They then took him to the adjacent police station where he was formally charged with influencing a witness.
Mr Havas was in court on Wednesday representing a client who was the subject of an attempted apprehended violence order (AVO).
Police allege he contacted the applicant of the AVO twice by calling her and twice by text message in an attempt to influence her.
Influencing a witness comes under Section 323a of the Crimes Act and carries a potential jail sentence of up to seven years.
He will appear before court at a later date.
The 35-year-old of Waterloo was notably Salim Mehajer’s solicitor during his bankruptcy proceedings.
However, he was sacked by Mr Mehajer who described him as “incompetent”.
After being sacked by Mr Mehajer he entered into a public war of words with the former deputy mayor.
He claimed Mr Mehajer had not paid him, telling reporters last year:
“If he has done anything wrong he can’t take the blame for himself. It is always somebody else’s fault.”
He added: “Had Mr Mehajer done what we had told him to do we would have been in a position to proceed today,” he said.
Back in 2014 he also represented infamous helicopter prison escapee John Killick.
