‘Hit-and-miss’: Australian voters reacting to federal budget

Labor and the Coalition are neck-and-neck once again, with The Australian’s Newspoll revealing the worst two-party-preferred polling result for the Albanese government since the wash-up of the failed Voice referendum.

Fresh polling conducted between June 3 and June 7 puts Opposition leader Peter Dutton within sight of preferred prime ministership, with 46 per cent naming Anthony Albanese the better PM to Dutton’s 38 per cent, narrowing the gap by 11 percentage points since last month.

Primary votes for the Coalition ticked up to 39 per cent from 37, while the Australian Labor Party fell to 33 per cent from 34. Preference for the Greens fell from 13 per cent to 11 per cent.

Asked to choose between only the ALP and the Coalition, voters were split precisely down the middle.

The results follow more than a fortnight of scandal for the Albanese government as it scrambles to contain the fallout from the Direction 99 deportation saga.

Voters’ satisfaction with the way Anthony Albanese is doing his job has plummeted since the 2022 federal election, and despite a steady lift since October, net satisfaction with the current prime minister has now slipped to -7.

Meanwhile, satisfaction with the way Peter Dutton is doing his job as leader of the Opposition has steadied to -10 – Dutton’s highest satisfaction rating since December 2023.
