Parramatta light rail to have grass tracks laid

Tram lines are not usually known for sprouting grass but the nation's longest stretch of green track is being laid along the $2.4 billion Parramatta light rail. See how it’s progressing.

Work is progressing on the Parramatta light rail, which will lay claim to having Australia’s longest stretch of green track at stops including Robin Thomas Reserve.

Transport Minister David Elliott said the track used wire-free technology within “heritage sensitive environments” and a total of 1.3km of green track would be used across the 12km alignment.

“As a sustainable alternative to concrete, this green track will use 81 per cent less concrete in its construction and deliver environmental and health benefits,’’ Mr Elliott said.

Grass will also be planted along the Cumberland precinct and Tramway Ave.

He said the track involved planting grass or groundcovers between and beside light rail tracks. The Zoysia “Nara” grass species was selected after a 12-month testing process in Rosehill to assess growth rate and durability in western Sydney conditions.

“Its key advantage is the species’ slow growth rate, which makes it low maintenance,’’ Mr Elliott said.

“The community will also benefit from the reduced urban heat and greener spaces.”

Business Western Sydney executive director David Borger said the grass track would be an original feature for Sydney’s light rail network, with it not seen in the east or inner west lines.

“We have too many hard surfaces,’’ he said.

“Trying to soften the edge of infrastructure always brings a smile.’’

Despite the light rail’s first stage being on track, community leaders have implored the government to commit to stage two, that would link Parramatta to Sydney Olympic Park.

This includes doubts that the project will extend to Camellia and Rosehill which will have 10,000 new homes, create almost 15,000 jobs and have a buzzing entertainment hub.

Stage one of the Parramatta light rail, which will connect Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD, is expected to operate services for customers next year.
