The Billbergia Indoor Sports Centre at Camellia will house four basketball courts for 21 sports and activities, a children’s soft play gym and be the new home for the West Sydney Wolves Sports Association and non-profit disability organisation Diverse Abilities when it opens in March.
West Sydney Wolves and Diverse Abilities co-founders Ronnie Khalil and Medeya Hamzze hatched the idea for the 5000sq m recreation drawcard which, along with the International Basketball Federation courts and multi-purpose training rooms, will have capacity for 1000 spectators and permanent seating for 600 people.
When it’s time to refuel, patrons can eat at the 86-seat cafe or at the outdoor garden-style milk bar as part of the facility.
Mr Khalil said the indoor centre was a win for the Parramatta community and western Sydney.
“After an intense past two years dealing with lockdowns, the Billbergia Indoor Sports Centre will not only offer an outlet for families and members of the community to enjoy a multitude of sports and recreational activities, but on the economical level, a significant amount of money will be injected into the local economy,’’ he said.
Billbergia managing director John Kinsella said the project would transform Camellia, where a light rail stop is planned in the largely industrial suburb.
“For us, creating communities means investing in an environment that brings families and community members together, and inspires and promotes healthy, active lifestyles,’’ he said.
Parramatta Lord Mayor Steven Issa welcomed the privately-owned stadium.
“It’s exciting to see the Billbergia Indoor Sports Centre come to fruition, in line with our vision to transform Camellia into a vibrant and liveable riverside hub for thousands of new residents and workers on the doorstep of the Parramatta CBD,” he said.
The West Sydney Wolves Sports Association will team up with organisations to ensure sports at the indoor centre will offer modified programs to serve the special needs community via Diverse Abilities.
The centre will also be the new home of the West Sydney Wolves Basketball Association.
Venue Management Australia, a subsidiary of the RK Group, will manage the stadium.
