Park planned for Carter Street Precinct at Uhrig Rd

Residents living in the Carter Street precinct at Lidcombe will be surrounded by some of the nation’s largest sporting arenas but a neighbourhood park with a playground and alfresco dining area is planned to energise the community.
A development application for 4-8 Uhrig Rd has been lodged with Parramatta Council, which will take over the site once landscaping works are carried out, subject to approval.
The green parcel of land is part of a community where three mixed-use towers are planned at the foot of Sydney Olympic Park and its drawcards include stadiums, athletics centre and the showground.
The triangular park proposed by the NSW Government will be part of the 39,243sq m densely-populated precinct.
The application to the council said the northern side of Carter Street was undergoing urban renewal and the development of a centre with housing, employment and retails services and access to entertainment at Sydney Olympic Park.
The southern side of Carter Street is studded with industrial uses and warehouse developments.
The park will include a outdoor dining zone with seating, village lawn area, shaded civic square and play area.
“The key objective of the proposal is to provide a Civic Park creating a destination for the community to gather, play, explore, eat and drink, and relax,’’ the application said.
“The new civic space aims to enhance the liveability of this new residential precinct, creating an energised space that will help provide a new sense of identity.’’
In June, an ambitious plan for a 91km walking and cycling path connecting Sydney Opera House and Parramatta Park was announced as part of the state budget.
A total of $60 million was allocated for the longest continuous path in the city, which will serve 18 suburbs along Parramatta River and Sydney Harbour.
However, closer to Parramatta suburbs, including Wentworth Point have had to fight hard for green space, such as the park promised for the peninsula.
Recently, the State Government pledged big bucks for the light rail to extend to Sydney Olympic Park and serve some of Australia’s most densely populated communities.
A total of $26.2 million was secured this year and $372.5 million allocated over the next four years.
