Canada Bay: LGA welcomes state government plans for CBD to Parramatta foreshore walk

The inner city local government area will be home to over a third of the distance of the newly proposed foreshore walk and is keen to unlock even more of its waterways.

A new waterfront walk set to boast some of the most coveted views in Sydney has been declared as a “gamechanger” for Canada Bay, which hopes to unlock even more of its 36km of foreshore.

Spanning from Drummoyne to Rhodes, the City of Canada Bay Council has welcomed the state government’s plan to build a new foreshore walk, which would link Sydney Opera House in the east to Parramatta Park in the west.

The state government recently announced it would commit $60 million in the budget to create a 91km waterfront walkway linking the two CBDs, opening up more of the foreshore for Sydneysiders. Over a third of the walkway would be situated in the Canada Bay LGA.

“I think it is a game changer for the area,” Deputy Mayor Stephanie Di Pasqua said.

“When you come down here you can see how much change this announcement will bring, I think it’s amazing.

“This could be one of those legacy projects that we can all be proud of as a council.”

Cr Di Pasqua has a record of foreshore advocacy; in October, her motion to investigate the possibility of a second bay run in the Kings Bay area was endorsed unanimously by the council.

Although in the embryonic stages, part of the funding would go to formalising the route and creating more accessible footpaths along the foreshore, much of which is currently either road or grass verge.

“We want to facilitate access a lot better and just make sure the foreshore is more accessible and inclusive,” Cr Di Pasqua said.

“As with any project we embark on, the first step will be consulting closely with the local residents and businesses.”

The route would be Sydney’s longest, eclipsing the current titleholder, the Bondi to Manly walking track.

“We are a gem nestled in metropolitan Sydney, the real God’s country,” the deputy mayor said.

“This foreshore plan would be for everyone – both those that live in the area and those that want to do the walk.

“It’s just amazing that we get to deliver this project, because it will create a legacy that will really improve our area.”
