After allegedly being hijacked by a man in a hospital gown, a terrified woman opened the door and tried to run before being attacked with a carpentry tool, police allege.
The horrific attack which left the woman fighting for life was one alleged episode in a rampage by 24-year-old Sonny Attard which only ended when he drove the car into a brick wall and almost killed himself on Tuesday night.
Attard had been taken to St George Hospital by ambulance earlier that day before he allegedly smashed a door and ran off about 8.30pm.
Police allege he jumped in the back seat of a Toyota Corolla on nearby Ocean St, Kogarah, being driven by a 52-year-old woman.
He allegedly produced a multipurpose carpentry tool, which included a fold-out blade, and ordered her to drive to the eastern suburbs.

Three kilometres away in Brighton Le Sands, police say the woman tried to make her escape when Attard attacked her.
“A struggle ensued and she suffered head and neck injuries. The neck injury was consistent with a stab wound,” Superintendent Julian Griffiths said.
The woman was rushed to St George Hospital and was fighting for life on Wednesday.
Attard allegedly then drove the car south before he lost control, hitting another car and crashing into a wall at the intersection of President Ave and Crawford Rd.
Resident Kelly Moffett and her husband Stu ran outside their Monterey townhouse to see Attard trapped in the car with glass, debris scattered all over the ground.
“We were trying to talk to him but he was just groaning … he was going in and out of consciousness,” Mr Moffett said.
“My husband ran back and got his tools and disconnected the battery because there was smoke everywhere.
“The sound (of the crash) was incredible, worse than an explosion. Then all you could hear was the engine still revving. And there were no skid marks.”
A nurse and doctor living nearby tried to help Attard until paramedics arrived.
Attard was in an induced coma last night.
