A man has died after his car crashed into a tree in Sydney’s south overnight, marking the 20th death on NSW roads in 17 days.

Police were called to a golf club on Bates Drive in Kareela shortly before 10.30pm following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Officers were told a red Mitsubishi SUV allegedly crashed into a fence before it ended up colliding with a tree.

“The driver and sole occupant – a 42-year-old man – was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics however, he died at the scene,” NSW Police said in a statement.

The crash occurred near the Sharks at Kareela Golf Club.

There were no other injuries reported due to this incident.

A crime scene was established.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

More than a dozen people have been killed on NSW roads in the last two weeks.

On Friday night a man died after his car left the roadway and collided with a tree in the state’s Hunter Region.

Paramedics tried to save the man but he died at the scene.

Less than 24 hours prior a teenager died and four others were seriously injured after a car they were travelling in collided with a tree at such force that pieces of the vehicle were found almost 80 metres away.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said a number of these tragedies were avoidable and urged drivers to follow road rules. Picture: supplied

Eighteen-year-old Selina Bennetts Ly was driving four friends home around 11pm on Thursday night when she crossed onto a median strip and collided with a tree at Wetherill Park.

Selina tragically died at the scene, while her friends – two boys aged 16 and 17 and two girls aged 17 and 19 – were taken to Liverpool and Westmead hospitals for further treatment.

On Wednesday night a man died after falling from a vehicle on the state’s far north coast.

The man, aged in his 20s, was a passenger in a Mercedes when he fell from the car near Chinderah and was struck by a passing motorist.

Bystanders rendered aid to the man but he died at the scene.

Just a day prior a fatal crash involving a car and motorcycle in Sydney’s west left two people dead and a third fighting for their life.

NSW Police believe the drivers involved were breaching road rules at the time.

The long list of horrific road-related deaths within the last fortnight included a father and his 11-year-old daughter who died while riding in the back of a DiDi in Sydney’s south.

Elsewhere across the state, a young man and woman were killed near Coffs Harbour two weeks ago after crashing into a tree.

Two days later, a 19-year-old man died after crashing into a tree near Mudgee.

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said the death toll was “ absolutely unacceptable”.

“What we are seeing in New South Wales is diabolical,” he said last Thursday.

“We want to see it stopped.”

Mr Khoury said there was “no single bullet solution” but believes policing is “the most effective way to address all forms of bad driving behaviours.”

“The government needs to maximise every tool in its arsenal. Increasing resourcing and police highway patrols should be our number one priority. Increasing their footprint in some key areas with RBT and drug testing,” he said.

“The tip of the spear needs to be policing and we know the government is dealing with challenges in terms of recruitment.”
