WORK on the $1.6 million upgrade to Clifford Park has begun, with preliminary drainage works now complete and the heavy machinery moving in to start the building and earth works, Lismore City Council has announced.

The upgrade will transform the facility, providing a recreational space for the local Goonellabah community and includes a new sports amenities building with changerooms and a kiosk, carpark upgrade and landscaping works.

Minister for Hospitality, Gaming and Racing Troy Grant and Lismore MP, Thomas George, announced the NSW Government's $1,638,590 funding for the upgrade in July last year following Council's successful ClubGRANTS application.

As well as providing the local community with a first-class facility and playground where they can gather and enjoy healthy activities, the park is the home ground of the Northern United Rugby League Football Club and will get plenty of use throughout the rugby league season.
