A first-hand account of South Lismore’s flood devastation has revealed unprecedented levels which caught even long-term locals by surprise. See the photos and video.

Flooding that surged into Lismore has left whole suburbs displaced after rising far beyond what residents had expected.

Many of them remained in their homes on Sunday night thinking they would have time to get to higher ground on Monday, if they needed to at all.

But it was clear as the sun rose on Monday that would not be the case and many people were in desperate need of saving.

Here are some pictures from a resident who managed to capture some of the chaos before her family was evacuated.
