Signage to deter scooters, cyclists, skateboarders

IF you are nearly knocked down by a skateboarder in Lismore's CBD, you may soon be able to point to a sign showing somebody carrying their board and then ask them politely to do the same.

At a council workshop on Tuesday night the issue of how to manage skateboards, cyclists and motor scooters sharing the walkways with pedestrians was aired, with signage and education coming out as the preferred option.

Senior law enforcement officer Jody Hinds said that at the moment Council had no authority to stop anybody on wheels using the footpath unless signs were erected that made it clear the activity was prohibited.

But Cr Vanessa Ekins argued that skateboards were "a legitimate form of transport for young people" and didn't think a sign banning them was the best way to resolve the issue.

Councillors discussed that as a cour- tesy board and bike riders should dismount in congested areas and it was resolved that a sign showing someone carrying their board be investigated.

Cr Ekins also suggested Mr Hinds should make a visit to all the local high schools and spread the message.
