The body of a Queensland man, who had not contacted his family since Christmas Day, has been found in a partially submerged car near Kyogle after one of two fatal crashes in northern NSW.
Officers from the Richmond Police District began investigating after the 49-year-old man’s family did not hear from him for several days.
The man had visited a Cougal property, about 60km north of Casino, before police found an overturned and partially submerged Ford Ranger four-wheel drive in a creek on Gradys Creek Rd, Loadstone, about 11am on Tuesday.
Police located a body, believed to be that of the missing man, inside the car.
The incident was not the only fatal crash in northern NSW during the festive period, with another man killed when his car crashed into a power pole in Mullumbimby on New Year’s Day.
Emergency services, including police, three ambulances and a helicopter, were called to Main Arm Rd following reports a car had hit a pole about 9.40am on Wednesday.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the driver and sole occupant, aged in his 60s, but he died at the scene.
Officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District have established a crime scene and are investigating the crash.
Police are urging any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact local officers or Crime Stoppers.
The road remains closed, with people detouring through The Pocket to travel to Main Arm.
One man who saw the New Year’s Day crash took to Facebook, writing: “Unfortunately it looked pretty bad”.
Reports on both deaths will be prepared for coroners.
