Two young Queensland men have been arrested after allegedly breaking into two homes, including an incident resulting in a physical altercation when the occupants woke up to find intruders going through their belongings.

Joshua Taylor, 19, and Jed Power, 20, faced Ballina Local Court via videolink from custody on Wednesday after each was charged with two counts of aggravated break and entering in company to steal.

They have not entered any pleas yet.

Court documents state Taylor and Power - who is apprentice boiler maker - were initially denied bail by police because they both had previous criminal matters in Queensland.

The alleged offences took place while the occupants were asleep inside their Byron Bay homes about 4.30am on December 17.

The pair allegedly broke into a Lawson St house filled with four people and stole a designer Missoni bag, a Casio watch, Nike shoes, a bottle of Don Papa Rum and cigarettes.

The young men continued the burglary spree when they allegedly broke into another Paterson Lane home and stole a PlayStation and controller while two people slept.

“The incident escalated to a physical altercation when the (alleged) victim had woken up,” police state.

Officers stopped a car on Jonson St and arrested the two men and took them to Byron Bay Police Station, court documents state.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said the alleged victims had woken up in the middle of the night to find the pair going through their belongings.

Ms Stafford granted conditional bail and they both must live at separate Queensland addresses and not contact each other.
