A Northern Rivers man arrested as part of domestic violence Operation Amarok has been accused of choking a woman and telling her “I’m going to kill you – I’m going to jail anyway”.

Brent Murray from The Channon faced Lismore Local Court on Monday.

The 33-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intimidation intending fear of harm, destruction of property, intentionally choking without consent and breaching a domestic violence order.

It follows an alleged domestic violence episode described as “extremely serious” by Magistrate Kathy Crittenden.

Brent Murray has pleaded not guilty to a string of domestic violence charges.
Brent Murray has pleaded not guilty to a string of domestic violence charges.

Murray has pleaded guilty to breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) on May 5 and June 15 at Tweed Heads.

But Murray has pleaded not guilty to attacking the woman in April.

Murray’s solicitor told the court he should be granted bail because the case against him was “weak” and it would take months before his matter went to hearing.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brett Gradisnik opposed bail.

Ms Crittenden told the court Murray had a “significant history of domestic violence”.

She said Murray allegedly threatened the complainant and that police had photographs of injuries.

Ms Crittenden said the offending was alleged to have happened after a previous domestic violence matter was finalised in February.

Murray was refused bail and his case was adjourned for hearing on November 14.
