KYOGLE is set to benefit from a new medical centre by the end of the year and with it will come a team of doctors, a cosmetic dentist and a pathologist.
The planned medical centre will replace the auto electrician on the corner of Roxy Lane and Anzac Drive in the Kyogle CBD, and will be next door to the site for the new Ritchies IGA supermarket.
Medical centre developer Nigel Mercer, of AusDevelopment, believes the new facility will fill a void in a town where a doctor’s appointment is difficult to come by.
“We are going to put a 550 square metre centre on the site and there will be medical doctors, modern cosmetic dentists, pathology and four or five other people like registered nurses, therapists, podiatrists, and so on,” he said.
“It will have street frontage on Roxy Lane, wheelchair access and a car park.
“When I did my research on the development I did not want to duplicate anything already in the town.
“There is only one doctor left in the Kyogle area and there is a need for more doctors.
“There is a two-week waiting list at the hospital and by the time you get to see a doctor your flu is gone.”
A development application has yet to be approved for the medical centre, but Mr Mercer expects construction on the complex to be finished by October, subject to council approval.
Construction is likely to be completed by local tradesmen ‘as soon as the council approves the building plans’.
The development will come as a relief to locals, who have seen the number doctors in their area dec-lining, including Kyogle Medical Centre GP Brian Perry, who ret-ired last month leaving his pat-ients scrambling to find another doctor.
Kyogle Council mayor Ross Brown said he would make further comment when the DA was put through council.
“But across the board, anything that increases medical services to the Kyogle community is a benefit,” he said.
