New Back Alley Gallery project starts Saturday

STAGE four of Lismore’s Back Alley Gallery will kick off on Saturday thanks to the efforts of musician John Butler and artist Ben Foster.

STAGE four of Lismore's Back Alley Gallery will kick off on Saturday thanks to the efforts of musician John Butler and artist Ben Foster.

A grant from national arts funding group The Seed Fund, which was set up by John Butler, will bring Melbourne-based street artist Ben Foster to Lismore on Saturday, where he will spend the weekend creating a large-scale stencil mural on a blank wall at Eggins Lane.

City Centre Manager Renee Moehead said that Mr Foster's art was unique and having a new yet another new design technique was a great way to launch Stage Four.

"As well as Eggins Lane, in Stage Four we also hope to get artwork on the walls in Larkin Lane behind the Strand Arcade," Ms Moehead said.

"There has been a bit of a hiatus with the Back Alley Gallery but this allows us to start the next stage with the long-term aim being that all of those inner-city laneways are filled with murals.

"This actively beautifies our city centre and while it is already an impressive sight, when all the laneways connect and are all covered in art, it will be a truly spectacular open-air gallery."

Ben Foster has been stencilling and pasting for over six years, starting out with small intricate works and moving onto large scale stencil murals and installations.

His work utilises bold colours and repetitive geometries designed to interact with their location. Ben has been a part of a number of group exhibitions in Newcastle at ArtHive, created murals for This Is Not Art Festival and the Street Arrt Walking project, as well as contributing to Paste Modernism 3 at Cockatoo Island.
