Dunoon near Lismore crash: Driver charged, motorcyclist in coma

A young man faces a raft of charges after a road crash at Dunoon left a motorcyclist on life support. See the latest.

A 26-year-old man has been charged over his involvement in a motor vehicle crash where a 50-year-old man suffered multiple serious injuries after his motorcycle and a car collided.

Emergency services were called to James Street, Dunoon, north of Lismore, about 4.30pm on Thursday, November 3, after reports a Subaru Forrester and a Kawasaki motorcycle had collided.

The rider was thrown from the bike and members of the public performed CPR on him until the arrival of paramedics.

NSW Ambulance called in the critical care medical team from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter shortly after arriving.

Together paramedics from both agencies treated and stabilised the motorcycle rider.

Due to the seriousness of the man’s injuries he was placed in an induced coma and put on life support.

The rescue helicopter critical care medical team then flew him to the Gold Coast University Hospital for further treatment.

The man remains there in a critical condition.

Officers from Richmond Police District attended the crash along with the Far North Coast Crash Investigation Unit.

The Subaru driver, a 26-year-old, was subjected to a roadside breath test which returned an alleged positive result.

Police arrested the man took him to Lismore Police Station where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.051.

Police conducted a search of the man and will allege they found cannabis in the man’s possession. He was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

The man was returned to Lismore Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous, drive with low range PCA, negligent driving – occasions grievous bodily harm, make U-turn without giving way to vehicle/pedestrian, and possess prohibited drug.

His licence was also suspended.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Lismore Local Court on December 5.
