A PERSON has been caught and fined for dumping household waste in Lindendale last week.

The incident was investigated by Lismore City Council rangers after a passing motorist witnessed the dumping.

Council rangers were able to track down the offender using material found in the dumped waste and the licence plate number provided by the caller.

The offender was issued with a clean-up notice and charged the cost of the clean up.

North East Waste's illegal dumping project officer, Tash Morton, said people who dumped rubbish illegally were increasingly likely to be caught.

"Councils across the region are been supported on a clamp down on illegal dumping with additional funding from the NSW Environment Protection Agency over the next two years," she said.

Lismore City Council's waste operations coordinator Kevin Trustum said catching illegal dumpers was of benefit to everyone in the community.

"Every year illegal dumping of household and garden rubbish costs ratepayers thousands of dollars with council waste staff and rangers tied up investigating dumping, and in the cleaning up of the mess," he said.

"Fortunately, many residents report incidents when they see people doing the wrong thing.

"This makes our job easier and improves the chances of catching the dumper and issuing fines for clean up."
