One of the region’s most inspiring cafes, providing opportunities for those struggling to find other work, has closed its doors.

Johnny’s was a not for profit social enterprise in Evans Heads, operated by the Mid Richmond Neighbourhood Centre, that offered training and career opportunities for people of all backgrounds and skill levels.

But on Friday the cafe announced doors would close for good on June 29.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the news to you all officially in regards to the closing of our beloved community run cafe Johnny’s,” a Facebook post said.

“Myself and the team at Johnny’s want to say a huge thank you to every single person that has supported us over the many years of trading.

“We appreciate you all and your support has not been unnoticed.

“We are all waiting in anticipation to see what the Mid-Richmond Neighborhood Centre has in store for the space, so keep your eyes posted for any updates.”

The cafe is also known for using fresh local produce from the Hive Community Garden while directing 100 per cent of profits back into the community through other services and initiatives.

The news had left many dedicated fans heartbroken.

“What a fantastic opportunity Johnny’s has been for Evans Head! We were so lucky to have a social enterprise run by a not-for-profit organisation, that was able to employ all walks of life,” one resident noted.

“Losing a true iconic business, that’s sad for Evans,” added another.

The Mid Richmond Neighbourhood Centre has been contacted for a comment.
