THE future of the Goonellabah library will be determined at a meeting of Lismore council tonight.

As part of its draft budget, the council planned to close the library to save $84,500 per annum.

But there was overwhelming community opposition to the proposal and a petition with 900 signatures was presented to the council asking for the library to be kept open.

Subsequently Cr Isaac Smith put forward a motion asking the council to look at ways of finding savings that would keep the library open.

Two options will be presented to the council, both of which will see the Goonellabah library kept open on slightly reduced hours.

Option A is to close Lismore Library on Sunday, which along with other saving measures and a reduction in library spending, would save a total of $112,000.

Option B, to keep it open on Sundays and to initiate savings in other areas that would see an overall saving of $109,000 for this financial year.
